# Us

We're Shivani and Avijeet. Shivani worked in corporate banking and Avijeet in design. There wasn't one moment when we sat down and decided to move to the mountains. It was something both of us had carried quietly for years, and one day we did it.

Aikkya is on a hillside in Seetla, above Mukteshwar. Ours is the only home on the hill, with seven and a half acres of orchard and forest around it. We've lived through six monsoons here now, and none of them has made us doubt it.

## The name

Aikkya, ऐक्य in Hindi and ঐক্য in Bangla, means oneness. A guest once put it better than we could: every corner of the place reflects "being Aikkya with nature".

## How we live

The oldest cottages here are about eighty years old, with stone walls and the traditional mud-fixed stone roofs. We restored them rather than build new. Most of what you'll see is old: stone, wooden doors and beams, and floors painted to look broken and mended. We would rather mend a thing than replace it.

Food comes from the farm and the villages around us where it can. Water is scarce on a hilltop, so we're careful with it, and we ask our guests to be careful too. The occasional leak in an old roof is part of life.

We lean on the people around us. In the mountains you get to know your electrician, your plumber and your carpenter, and over time they become much more than that.

Aikkya isn't a business we're trying to grow. What this life has given us is time: to think, to make things, to be with family, and to live at a pace that feels right. We keep it small so it stays that way.

## Turiya

Turiya is a space at Aikkya for doing things, and for doing nothing at all. We gather there for music, art, some form of meditation, or a conversation that wanders well beyond where it began. [More about Turiya](https://www.aikkya.in/journal/2026-09-28-turiya/).

## Who else lives here

The dogs, who guests tend to remember by name. The cows, who call in the mornings. And sometimes a cat named Billi.
